An international conference on tunnels and underground structures is taking place in Ljubljana, organised by ITA Slovenia. The conference is attended by many experts from Slovenia and abroad, and the head of the technical sector of the company 2TDK, Marjan Zaletelj, presented the construction of the Second Track project from Divača to Koper, as well as the current challenges faced on the project.
Marjan Zaletelj pointed out that as much as 75% of the railway line runs through tunnels, with a large part of it also passing through karst terrain, where construction teams encountered numerous karst phenomena. During excavation works, the company 2TDK also faced some karst features so extensive that they had to be bridged using underground bridges.
To find suitable solutions for spanning underground gaps exceeding 42 metres in length, many experts had to be engaged—including geologists, engineers, and others. Zaletelj also presented the geological challenges in the Glinščica Valley, where several shafts will need to be constructed in order to stabilise the terrain.
The conference also highlights key challenges and trends in modern underground construction.
