The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has recognized the significant progress made on the Second track project and the successful management of Slovenia’s largest infrastructure project, and has decided to award it an additional €156 million in non-repayable European funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) call for proposals.
The Divača–Koper second rail track project is already in its final phase of construction. The main construction works are being completed, while railway installation works are being carried out at an accelerated pace. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has recognized the enormous progress of the project and the successful management of the largest infrastructure project in Slovenia, and has decided to award it an additional EUR 156 million in non-repayable EU funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (Connecting Europe Facility) call.
The obtained EU grants represent a significant financial relief for the project and ensure conditions for its high-quality, modern, and technologically advanced implementation. The company 2TDK has thus secured EUR 101 million more in non-repayable EU funds than originally foreseen in the revised investment programme (NIP-2).
The acquisition of EU funds confirms that the Divača–Koper second rail track project continues to be recognized as one of the most important infrastructure projects at the level of the European Union as a whole, acknowledged and promoted as an example of good practice in infrastructure implementation. The funding relates to works carried out under Package 3, namely the main rail infrastructure and track equipment within this package, as well as co-financing the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which ensures interoperability and a higher level of safety and efficiency.
We are proud that Slovenia has received significantly more EU grants than initially planned in this financial perspective under the CEF instrument and in the investment programme for the Divača–Koper second track. The total value of all EU non-repayable funds awarded to the Second Track project to date amounts to EUR 390 million.
Matej Oset, CEO of 2TDK, emphasized: “Successfully obtained EU grants represent an important boost for the implementation of the Second Track project. This support from Europe is a confirmation for us that the project is of strategic importance both for Slovenia and for the wider region. We are grateful to everyone who participated in preparing the application and fulfilling the demanding requirements. We continue with the awareness that we are still managing the project in a high-quality manner and in line with the set goals.”
Marko Brezigar, Director of 2TDK, adds: “The received EU grants are not only a financial incentive, but also an important recognition that Europe identifies the Second Track project as a best practice example in the field of sustainable infrastructure and cross-border connectivity. This confirms that we are following high standards of planning, execution, and project management. Such trust further motivates us to continue with dedication and remain committed to efficiency, transparency, and long-term sustainable mobility goals.”
