A system is being installed in the T8 to reduce train noise and vibration

20. February 2025

Mass-spring systems are designed to protect people living near the railway line, ensuring that the new infrastructure has as little impact as possible on their quality of life.

Since the Škofije Tunnel (T8) is located near residential areas, a Mass-Spring System (MSS) is being installed in certain sections of the tunnel. Based on a preliminary study, the system was installed in the Plavje and Dekani areas. The MSS system is frequently used in railway tunnels, on viaducts, and in urban areas where vibrations and noise are particularly critical factors. Such solutions are already well-established in many European cities where high-speed and heavy rail lines cross densely populated areas.

The MSS system operates on the principle of a floating slab, which is separated from the rigid foundation by elastic elements such as rubber bearings, polyurethane pads, and steel springs. You can see the installation of polyurethane pads in the photos; they are red-purple in color and are placed under the track. These elements act as vibration dampers, absorbing the vibrations generated by passing trains and preventing their transmission to the tunnel structure or surrounding buildings. In addition to reducing vibrations, the MSS system also effectively reduces so-called secondary noise, which is transmitted through the air and affects the comfort of residents living near the track.
