Soon, 10 kilometers of track will be laid on the second track
Almost 10 kilometers of track have already been laid along the 27-kilometer route of the second track between Divača and Koper. After the main construction work on the section between Črni Kal and Koper was completed in July, railway work is now proceeding at an accelerated pace on this section. To ensure the project is completed as quickly as possible, railway works have been carried out simultaneously with construction works for some time now.
Despite the natural challenges faced by the contractors, the second track will be ready for rail traffic from the Divača station to the Koper station in March 2026, and testing necessary for the line’s future operation will begin. During construction, certain factors remain unknown, and adjustments are inevitable, but they are mostly being resolved successfully. The two biggest challenges that had to be overcome were bridging large karst cavities in the tunnels and stopping landslides in the Glinščica Valley. Five bridges in the tunnels will soon be built, although the logistics of the project were very demanding—contractors and designers faced such a challenge for the first time. Measures to stop the landslide in the Glinščica Valley are also already underway, but since there are so many of them, their implementation will take some time. This is a complex engineering project involving geologists, civil engineers, and contractors, who are working together to find the most effective solutions for the long-term stability of the area.
Every kilometer of track laid brings us one step closer to a modern rail connection. It is important to emphasize, however, that despite all the unforeseen challenges, the Second Track project remains within the financial framework established back in 2019. 2TDK, the project’s investor, is proud that, despite inflation, rising construction material costs, and higher labor costs, the project is proceeding in accordance with the planned financial framework.
