Track laying on ballasted track completed in the Divača section

13. February 2026

Although along the 23 km section from Divača to Koper (the railway is 27.1 km long) slab track is being installed, the line begins in Divača on an open section where conventional ballasted track is planned. The contractors have now completed track laying on this section, meaning that 94% of the entire railway line has already been equipped with track.

Before the Second Track line turns into the first tunnel, it runs for approximately two kilometres through a cutting. On this section, ballasted track installation took place in several phases. This method is otherwise faster than the construction of slab track, as it is a less technologically demanding process that allows quicker progress of works.

In ballasted track construction, the rails are fixed to concrete sleepers laid on a layer of crushed stone, whereas slab track requires precise preparation before concrete is poured, leaving no room for errors.

A total of 25.3 km of track has now been laid, with less than two kilometres still remaining to be completed.
