A new dual-mode firefighting vehicle for interventions in railway tunnels has arrived
The company 2TDK has taken over the first dual-mode firefighting vehicle from the supplier WEBO Maribor and will hand it over to the professional Fire Brigade Koper, with which it has signed an agreement to ensure fire safety in the tunnels of the Second Track Divača–Koper railway line. The dual-mode rescue vehicle is a specialised vehicle intended primarily for interventions in railway tunnels and can operate both on roads and on railway tracks.
The dual-mode vehicle can also be used on open railway lines, especially in sections where there is no access for road vehicles. The vehicle is additionally equipped with a railway running gear, as well as its own drive system and braking system for rail operation. Potential interventions on railway infrastructure will be carried out in such a way that the dual-mode vehicle is driven by road to pre-determined locations in front of tunnels, where access platforms are used for placing the vehicle onto the rails.
Equipment of the dual-mode firefighting vehicle
The vehicle is equipped with a compressed air tank that supplies both the vehicle’s engine and the firefighters’ breathing apparatus connection. It can transport up to six firefighters and has a 2,500-litre water tank, a 250-litre foam tank, and an electrical generator. On the roof, it is fitted with a water monitor.
On roads, the vehicle has a speed limit of 90 km/h, while on rail it can reach 20 km/h, or 40 km/h when the air buffer system is activated for rapid evacuation in case of an emergency escape from a railway tunnel. In addition to railway interventions, the vehicle is also suitable for operations in road tunnels.
Procurement history
In 2023, 2TDK published a public procurement for two dual-mode rescue vehicles for interventions in railway tunnels. In December 2023, a contract was signed with the supplier for the delivery of two such vehicles.
