International Experts on a Site Visit to the Second Track
As part of the BCRRA international conference, participants took part in a site visit to the Divača–Koper second-track railway project on June 25.
As part of the international conference on the capacity of roads, railways, and airports (BCRRA 2026)—considered one of the most important professional gatherings in the field of transportation infrastructure—participants took part in a site visit on June 25 to the Divača–Koper second-track railway project. International experts gained firsthand insight into the challenges, technological solutions, and progress of one of the most technically demanding railway infrastructure projects in Europe.
The tour began with a presentation on the strategic importance of the second-track project for the development of the Slovenian and European railway networks, as well as its benefits for the Slovenian economy and logistics. This was followed by a visit to the T8 Koper Tunnel, where participants gained a more detailed understanding of the construction of the track on a rigid foundation. The tour then took them to the Vinjan Valley, where they viewed the Vinjan Viaduct and learned about the methods used to integrate complex infrastructure structures into the rugged Karst terrain. They were also shown the cantilever construction of the viaduct, which represents one of the types of viaduct construction used in the project.
The Gabrovica Viaduct, one of the most recognizable structures along the route of the new railway line, made a particular impression on the participants. At the information point beneath the viaduct, participants learned more about its technical characteristics and construction using the push-launch method, while also taking advantage of the visit to view one of the most iconic vantage points along the second track.
The field trip allowed participants to supplement the expert discussions and theoretical knowledge gained at the international conference—which took place in Ljubljana—with firsthand experience on site. This provided them with a more comprehensive insight into the scope, complexity, and innovative engineering solutions of the Divača–Koper second track project, as well as its role in the development of a modern, high-capacity, and sustainable railway infrastructure.
