Workforce needs in the railway sector
The CEO of 2TDK, Marko Brezigar, participated on Thursday, 7 May 2026, in a panel discussion titled “Workforce Needs in the Railway Sector,” held at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture in Maribor.
The event was dedicated to discussing current staffing needs in the railway sector, the education of future professionals, and employers’ expectations of graduates in transport engineering. Participants also highlighted the importance of the intensive development of railway infrastructure as a major opportunity for students and future professionals in the sector, and shared the common conclusion that there is a shortage of transport experts in Slovenia.
In the introductory part of the event, the results of a survey on staffing needs for graduates in railway transport, the development of railways in Slovenia, and study programmes at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture in the field of railways were presented. According to the survey and an analysis by the Chamber of Commerce from March 2026, 52% of companies stated that their operations are hindered due to a shortage of highly educated professionals.
At the panel discussion, alongside the CEO of 2TDK, Marko Brezigar, who presented the Second Track project and addressed staffing needs that the operation of the new railway line will bring across various sectors of the economy, representatives of key institutions and companies from the railway transport and infrastructure sector also participated. The discussion focused on the future development of the railway sector, labour market needs, and the integration of the education system with the economy.
Participants also had the opportunity, on the sidelines of the panel, to view the exhibition “The Soča River and Its Bridges,” which presents nine of the most interesting bridges along the Soča River, including the famous Solkan Bridge with the world’s largest stone arch.
