Before the start of construction of the parallel left track of the Divača–Koper railway line, archaeological investigations will again be carried out on parts of the route. The company 2TDK has published a public procurement for the implementation of preliminary archaeological research, through which experts will examine the possible presence of archaeological remains in areas of future construction works.
The research will be conducted in three areas where archaeological sites have already been registered, mainly in the vicinity of Osp. The selected contractor will, among other tasks, review existing documentation prepared for the right track, excavate test trenches in areas affected by the works, and prepare a professional report. The deadline for completion of the works is 12 months from the official start of implementation.
Archaeological research on the right track uncovered Roman remains
Archaeological investigations along the right track route have already led to significant discoveries from the Roman period. The sites were uncovered far from today’s settlements and transport corridors.
At the Staje site, remains of a Roman rural estate, a villa rustica from the 1st century AD, were discovered. In the residential part of the villa, archaeologists also found a silver coin of Emperor Vespasian during excavations.
Among the more interesting finds was also an 11-centimetre-long bronze spearhead with a broken tip, dating from between 1300 and 750 BC, which was used as a throwing weapon.
