Will remains from the Roman period also be discovered in the area of the left track?
Preliminary archaeological surveys are underway along a section of the parallel left track of the Divača–Koper railway line. Based on the project conditions issued by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, archaeologists have begun digging test trenches to determine whether archaeological remains are hidden beneath the surface and whether more extensive archaeological research will be necessary before construction of the parallel left-hand track begins.
Archaeologists are primarily exploring the area around Osp, where archaeological sites have already been documented. Although the landscape is now mostly covered by forest, excavations conducted during the construction of the right-hand track have shown that this area was once extremely lively. Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of Roman roads and rural estates, a silver coin, amphorae, keys, rings, and even a burial ground. The construction of the railroad has given researchers access to areas that were previously difficult to reach, allowing them to discover numerous previously unknown traces of the past. Research along the left-hand track will also contribute to a better understanding of life in this area and may reveal new significant discoveries.
If this area was once a transportation and economic hub, the new railroad line will restore its important role. Roman roads once ran through here, and soon the area will once again be marked by traffic—this time by rail.
