Tracks also laid on the Gabrovica viaduct

After the Vinjan viaduct was equipped with railway infrastructure during the summer months, when contractors had to deal with high temperatures and therefore carried out certain works at night, tracks have now also been laid on the Gabrovica viaduct, which is located beneath the Črni Kal motorway viaduct.

The installation of track on a rigid slab takes longer than the installation of conventional ballasted track, but such track has a longer service life and also lower maintenance costs.

First, a load distribution slab was constructed, followed by the installation of rails and reinforcement, after which the final load-bearing track slab was cast. The Gabrovica viaduct is 416 metres long, and its deck structure is designed in the form of a concrete trough resembling the letter U.

Tunnels and viaducts, with their rigid concrete structures, provide an ideal base for the construction of slab track, which requires a solid and homogeneous foundation without significant longitudinal changes.

Slab track construction has also begun in the longest tunnel on the Second Track alignment, the Lokev tunnel (T1).
