2TDK welcomes the Ministry of Labor's involvement in resolving the issues faced by Turkish workers

15. May 2025

2TDK welcomes the fact that the Ministry of Labor, Family, Social Affairs, and Equal Opportunities has joined the effort to find solutions to the problems faced by Turkish workers residing in the Orehek camp, as we believe that constructive dialogue is key to improving the situation. Only the Ministry, through its labour inspectorate services, has the authority and tools to ensure compliance with labour and employment regulations.

The employment contracts of the workers in Orehek are held by the company Yapı Merkezi, which is one of the contractors on the Second Track project, and labour-related matters must be resolved within the framework of the signed employment contracts. As the client, 2TDK has already repeatedly called on Yapı Merkezi to resolve the situation with its workers as soon as possible and in an appropriate manner.

With this purpose, 2TDK immediately held a meeting with representatives of Yapı Merkezi upon receiving information about the situation in Orehek, during which the Turkish construction company’s representatives assured that they are addressing the situation with each worker individually and that they have already reached appropriate solutions with most of them.

At the same time, we wish to emphasise again that 2TDK, within its legal competencies, cannot directly intervene in the employment relationships between the contractor and its employees. If certain aspects of the employer’s conduct are nevertheless questionable from a moral or labour-law perspective, this is a matter for further assessment by the competent authorities. As stated, 2TDK is doing everything within its competence to ensure that the situation of the workers residing in the Orehek camp is resolved as quickly as possible, but its possibilities remain limited in this regard.

According to information provided by Yapı Merkezi, all workers who are still accommodated in Orehek remain employed and continue to receive payment. Nevertheless, as the project client, we will closely monitor developments and will continue to expect all contractual partners to respect fundamental workers’ rights and ensure dignified treatment.
