From the Construction Site to the Railroad Track

4. September 2026

The view of the second track between Divača and Koper today is completely different from what it was just a year ago. Today, there are only a few scenes along the route that remind us of the major construction work of recent years. The tracks have been laid, the rail network is in place, the viaducts and tunnels are complete, and the former construction sites are gradually giving way to the new railway connection. The exception is the Glinščica Valley, where a large construction site remains in place due to the demanding work required to stabilize the area. However, there are still a number of important steps to be taken between the moment the line appears to be complete and the moment regular rail traffic can begin running on it.

Before regular rail service begins on the new track, all systems that enable the safe operation of the line must be tested and properly integrated—from the traction network, power supply, and signaling and safety equipment to telecommunications, fire safety, ventilation, and other equipment in the tunnels. The individual systems must function not only independently but also as a whole.

Final installation of electrical and mechanical equipment, testing of the installed systems, and technical inspections are currently underway as part of the process to obtain a certificate of occupancy, followed by the acquisition of an operating permit. The project is thus entering its final phase—a period when construction machinery is finally being removed from the railway line, in preparation for the start of regular service.
