The Vinjan Viaduct Was Tested with Heavy Trains
A load test was conducted on the Vinjan Viaduct along the Divača–Koper second-track route to verify the structure’s response to the loads to which the viaduct will be subjected during normal operation of the line. Such tests confirm that the structure behaves in accordance with the design assumptions and the computational model when subjected to actual loads.
Two heavy locomotives pulling several freight cars filled with crushed stone were used for the load test. During the static portion of the test, the train applied loads to individual spans of the viaduct at predetermined locations; during the dynamic portion, the train traversed the viaduct at various speeds—ranging from 20 to 100 km/h—and an additional load of 100 km/h was applied by braking on the viaduct. The viaduct’s response was monitored throughout the test using measuring equipment installed at various points on the structure. Such tests are a standard and important step prior to the commencement of railway operations.
The Vinjan Viaduct is the longest viaduct on the second-track route. A train consisting of approximately 1,200 metric tons traveled across the Vinjan Viaduct on the tracks that will carry regular rail traffic in the future. Following the test at Vinjan, a similar load test will be conducted on the Gabrovica Viaduct. Load tests will also be carried out on structures spanning karst formations in tunnels and on the open track.
