Parallel track

The Government has approved the investment programme for the parallel left track

8. May 2026

With the right track nearing completion, the Government has also approved the investment programme for the parallel left track, marking another important step forward in the development of the double-track Divača–Koper railway line.

On the future left track, three of the longest tunnels have already been constructed as service tubes for the right track. However, construction still includes two viaducts, one bridge, and three shorter tunnels. Until full double-track operation is established, rail traffic between Divača and Koper will run on the new right track and the existing line from 1967, which is increasingly unsuitable for modern transport demands due to its age. Therefore, the construction of the left track is crucial for the long-term reliability of the connection.

The investment value of the parallel left track amounts to €430.2 million (excluding VAT, in current prices). The investment programme defines not only the financial scope of the project, but also the implementation timeline, technical solutions, funding sources, and the expected transport and economic impacts of the investment.

Major construction works are scheduled for the period 2027–2030, with the entire investment expected to be completed by the end of 2030.

Upon completion of the project, the line’s capacity will increase to approximately 252 trains per day, significantly strengthening the competitiveness of the Port of Koper and contributing to the reduction of road traffic.
